2002 President
Ed Argüelles is a writer, photographer, and software engineer. He is a strong advocate for education and healthcare. He is also the founding editor of Kababayan, Fil-Am’s newsletter. Ed is currently the president of the Kappa Epsilon Alumni Association of North America. The fraternity, founded at the University of the Philippines, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
Ed’s charming better half is Dr. Verna Argüelles, a talented pianist, and currently Fil-Am’s Scholarship Committee chairperson. Ed and Verna are proud parents of a gifted son,
Paolo Argüelles, Fil-Am’s Jose Rizal Scholarship awardee in 2014. Paolo graduated summa cum laude from CalState Los Angeles last May with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. He, at only 19-years young, pursued and graduated with a degree in Master of Engineering at Cornell University.
THE YEAR’S HIGHLIGHTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:

During Ed’s term, the Fil-Am Apolinario Mabini Scholarship Award was established. Through this program, the Fil-Am partners with the Hospicio de San Jose, an orphanage in Manila and has, as of this year, succeeded in helping four worthy students finish college.

The town of Sariaya, Quezon was selected as the sister city of Santa Clarita.

The Fil-Am Cultural Dance Troupe was created and headed by Malou Resella, Cecille Gordon and Sandra Barlan.

The Jose Rizal awardee for the year was David Schein.
